Milton Irvin Smith

Milton Irvin Smith, 78, of Amarillo, died Wednesday, February 20, 2013.
Services will be at 2:00 PM, Friday, February 22, 2013 at St. Stephen United Methodist Church, 4600 South Western with Rev. Ken Cole officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 South Georgia.
Milton Irvin Smith was born on Sept. 13, 1934, in Gran Quivera, NM.  He was the seventh of nine children born to Ora Mae Stewart Smith and Elmer Irvin Smith. In 1953, he met and married his lifelong partner and friend Marguerite Ruth Johnson. They shared 59 ½ years together.  During the early years of their marriage they traveled to California and New Mexico settling in Texas.  In 1954, with his parent's signature as he was still a minor, he went to work for the Fort Worth & Denver City Railway, beginning a 44 year career. Mr. Smith retired from the Burlington Northern Railroad as the last "passenger steam qualified engineer."
Following retirement he enjoyed being Pit Manager for a Championship sprint car driven by his son David for several years.  He acquired and repaired bicycles for the Presbyterian Childrens' Home.  He was always busy learning and working on new  projects , including computers, solar lighting, wind turbines, rebuilding coal oil lamps,  and repairing/rebuilding anything that needed work.  He always dreamed big and was willing to help others live bigger.
His greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his wife, Marguerite; children, Milton "Edd" Smith  and wife Linda  of Weslaco TX, Terri Dionizio and husband Augusto James of Las Vegas NV, and David Smith and wife Tanya of Amarillo; grandchildren, Marquita Brown and husband Frank of Las Vegas, NV, Angie Moose and husband John of Borger, TX, Holly Jones and husband Jeremy of De Ridder LA, Kira Clark and Husband Peter of Spring Hill FL, Trent Hickman of Amarillo, James Dionizio and wife Whitney of Lockhart TX; and 8 greatgrandchildren; siblings, Jerry Dewit Smith of Almagorda NM, Florence Robertson of Lubbock TX, and Bernice Pelletier of Almagorda NM. He is preceeded by: his parents, granddaughter Jennifer Troublefield, siblings Oleta Bernard, Ollie Alice Hudman, Vernon Smith, Lawrence Smith, and Nolan Smith.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 -7:00 PM Thursday, February 21, 2013 at the funeral home. Viewing times will be Thursday from 10:00 AM until 8:00 PM and Friday from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM.
