Mynetta Boardman, 94, of Amarillo, slipped away peacefully into the arms of Jesus her
Savior on Saturday, December 15, 2012, surrounded by her family.
Born on May 8, 1918 in Pike County, Indiana, Mynetta was the 11th of 12 children in the family of Martin Van Buren Fowler and Mary Lottie Fletcher Fowler. They raised their children in the admonition of the Lord, and she happily attended church all of her life. Mynetta graduated from Spurgeon High School in Spurgeon, Indiana. She attended the Baptist Church, but she had Methodist feet and loved to dance. As a young woman, she danced to the music of famous Big Bands in the Chicago Ballrooms. She was also a photographer’s model there.
Mynetta married Harold Eugene Boardman on March 8, 1946, and they were married 66 years. He said he fell in love with her the first time he saw her. Every time he left their house, he kissed her goodbye and he greeted her with a kiss when he came home. Because of his long military career, they lived in many places, including Indiana, Illinois, Alaska, New Mexico, and Texas, where they retired. She ministered to many of the single enlisted servicemen in Alaska and New Mexico by inviting them for meals and giving them a home away from home. Some of them stayed in contact with the Boardmans through the years. While Gene served in WWII, Mynetta worked as Rosie the Riveter in a plant in Evansville, Indiana. She also worked in the Aurora Borden’s Ice Cream Shop and later became a dental assistant.
Most of Mynetta's adult years were spent as a joyful and busy homemaker-raising her children and serving others. Cooking for family and friends, sewing for her daughters, and decorating her home, especially at Christmas, were always a joy to her. When she made clothes for her little girls, she made three dresses at a time and dressed them as triplets for many years.
Mynetta was a member of First Baptist Church in Amarillo for more than 40 years, and was formerly a member of Central Baptist Church in Clovis, NM. Because of her commitment to God, she took her daughters to church faithfully--twice on Sundays, to Wednesday night prayer meetings, and to revivals. Her girls went to church as naturally as they went to school. Each evening after she put the girls to bed, she would later come to their beds, touch their feet, and pray silently for each one. She taught them about Jesus and Christian values, the importance of family, working hard and making good grades, and neighborliness. She was kind to everyone, rich or poor. She leaves her family the fragrance of a Christian mother's everlasting and sacrificial love.
Mynetta was preceded in death by her husband Gene, who died March 16 ,2012. Survivors include three daughters: twins Linda June Kramer (husband Gary) of Albuquerque, NM, and Lana Jean Smith of Phoenix, AZ; and Lela Jo Ford (husband David) of Amarillo;
grandchildren Leslie and David Kramer, Greg and Tony Smith, and Jeffrey, Jonathan, and Justin Ford; seven great-grandchildren; and many loved ones in Indiana and other states.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 27, 2012 at Schooler Funeral Home, Brentwood Chapel, 4100 South Georgia, with her pastor, Dr. Howard Batson of First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery with Dr.
