Myrna Lynn (Gimp) Raffkind

January 3, 1940 — January 31, 2017

Myrna Lynn Raffkind, 77, of Amarillo died Tuesday, January 31, 2017.

Memorial Services will be held 1:00 p.m. Monday, February 6, 2017 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church with Rabbi Josh Zweiback of California officiating. Private interment will be at Llano Cemetery.  Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia.

Myrna was born January 3, 1940 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Moe and Dorothy Gimp.  She married Daniel Raffkind on June 19th in San Antonio.

Myrna  earned two master’s degrees from West Texas A&M University, one in psychology and one in sociology, while raising four children — Heidi, Adam, Sara and Benjamin, who died in 1998.  She taught psychology and sociology from 1985 through 1998 at the university before being named an instructor emerita in 2009. She was also honored as the Amarillo Globe-News Woman of the Year in 2010 for her support of numerous local charities and work as a community advocate.

Myrna’s work touched a countless number of lives through causes of those in need, each one meaningful to her in its own special way. Her motto was “What more can I do…”  She was a saint to many and loved by all. She made tremendous self-sacrifices in order to help the great cause.  Myrna was modest, gracious, understanding, and wonderfully generous. She was selfless and always put her hardships aside to make sure others were okay.  Myrna was a woman of faith that found beauty in everything and everyone.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her fourth child, Benjamin Raffkind in 1998.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Daniel Raffkind; her children, Heidi van Zanten of North Carolina, Adam Raffkind of Alberta, Canada, and Sara Raffkind of Amarillo; her sister, Judy Zweiback and husband Allen Ross of Omaha, Nebraska;  her step-sister, Beverly Blumenthal and her eleven grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in honor of Myrna to a charity of your choice.
