Nancy Irene Rael, age 86 of Amarillo died September 16, 2015 in Amarillo.
Funeral Mass will be said 2:00 P.M, Saturday, September 19, 2015 at St. Hyacinth Catholic Church, 4500 West Hills Trail, with Father James Schmitmeyer as celebrant. Interment will be at Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 South Georgia.
Nancy was born to Oliver and Elvina Johnson on April 3, 1929 in Los Angeles, CA. While working at Standard Oil in Los Angeles, she met the love of her life, Jose Rael. They were married in 1955. She earned a bachelor’s degree in math and a master’s degree in business from Cornell University. She and Jose settled in Amarillo in 1958 and were founding members of St. Hyacinth Catholic Church. At one point she served as president of the Rosary Society. Being community minded, she not only served on the local draft board and the Amarillo Symphony, she also volunteered at Caprock High School and Opportunity School.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her son, Michael Rael; her grandson, Anthony Rael; her daughter-in-law, Jill Rael; and her sister, Margo Kendall.
Nancy is survived by two daughters, Maria Nelon and husband, Doug of Abilene, and Katrina “Tina” Hall and husband, Shane of Cañon City, CO; three sons, Don Rael and wife Sharon of Amarillo, Chris Rael and Mark Rael, both of Honolulu, HI; twelve grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
The family suggest memorials be made to Opportunity School, 1100 S. Harrison, Amarillo, Texas 79101 or a charity of choice.
Visitation will be from 6:00-7:00 PM today at the funeral home.
