Nannette “Nan” Jill Yoder, 84, died Tuesday, August 27, 2013.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 31, 2013 in St. Paul United Methodist Church with Frank Frisbie and Dr. H. E. Stephens officiating. Private entombment will be in Llano Cemetery Mausoleum. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia.
The stock market had just crashed in 1929 and then came the 1930’s.
Nan Yoder grew up in Huntington, Indiana in Middle America. The summers were humid and hot. The winters were cold, the zero temperatures and knee high snows, lasting months on the ground. However, the Wabash River would freeze and Nan loved the ice skating which was great fun.
Sunday nights, the family, (Nan’s brother Bob, her mother Mildred, Grandma Nora and Grandpa Charlie) gathered around the radio listening to Jack Benny, Rochester, and eating devil’s food cake and Jell-O. Then came summer and the nights were sparkling with fire flies or lightening bugs, as they were called then. In the summer, entertainment was bicycling, roller skating (in traveling roller rinks) and hide n’ seek at night with the neighborhood kids. The highlight was swimming at Big Blue stone quarry and movies every Saturday afternoon.
Then came the 1940’s and World War II had just begun. It was now time for high school, dancing to the big bands, basketball and football games, and cheerleading for the high school Vikings, then, a year of college and marriage. In the early 1950’s, Nan and husband, Rex Yoder, moved to Amarillo, Texas and had three girls; Tamson Nora Lance, Stephanie Lou Yoder and Leslie Ann Thorne. The girls were married and blessed Nan with eight grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. Church played a large part in their lives. Entertainment consisted of Sunday school, couples parties, bridge and dance clubs.
The 60’s through the 90’s were exciting. During those years, Nan worked for AT&SF Railroad, taught Graphoanalysis at Amarillo College and was involved in a business partnership for twenty years. She traveled as much as she could, visiting most of the United States (including Hawaii), Mexico, San Juan, Saint Thomas, Saint John, Puerto Rico, Aruba, and Paris. What fun and the tales she would tell.
It is a new century, time to retire with gratitude for family, good parents, faithful friends, and the Lord God – truly a great life.
Nan will be available for viewing from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m., Friday, August 30, at the funeral home.
The family suggests memorials be made to City Church, 205 S. Polk, Amarillo, TX 79101; or to Opportunity School, 1100 S. Harrison, Amarillo, TX 79101.
