Neva Hooks Burks
Neva Burks, 89, of Belton, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, with her son and daughter-in-law by her side.
Visitation, followed by the rosary, will be held Wednesday, December 27, 2023, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia in Amarillo. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 28, 2023, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, located at 4100 S. Coulter in Amarillo.
Neva was born January 12, 1934, in Morton, Texas, to Elma “Susie” Barnett Hooks and Rupert Hooks. In the mid-1940s, her family landed in Amarillo, where she lived for most of her life. In 2018, Neva moved to Salado to be closer to family. Her final move in February 2022 was to Stoney Brook Assisted Living Center in Belton. The staff at Stoney Brook loved Neva and enjoyed her humor and her grace, and she loved them in return. She rarely missed attending family events, games, holidays, and birthday celebrations.
Throughout the years, Neva volunteered for many charitable organizations, some of which included the High Plains Epilepsy Association, PEO, the Amarillo Art Center, the YWCA, and the women’s church groups at both St. Andrews Episcopal Church and St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, where she became a member later in her life. She loved her home in Amarillo, often holding functions for various community events. She and her late husband were actively involved in the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher through the Amarillo Catholic Diocese. She especially loved her PEO sisters and her rosary group.
Neva is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Nolan Burks, her parents, her brother, infant sons Dickie and David, and great-grandchildren, Levi Machac and Gwyneth Glos.
She is survived by her son Kyle Heitmiller (Pam) of Belton, daughter Kelle Simon (Jim) of Dallas, son Brad Burks (Mishelle) of Denton and daughter Darel Tenhoff (Craig) of Sequim, Washington; grandchildren Brett Bagley (Robert), Blair Hodges (Clayton), Ben Hall (Brandilyn), Brooke Machac (A.J.), Elizabeth Gunn (Matt), Bailey Glos (Brady), Beau Heitmiller and fiancé Bayleigh, Matt Burks (Hannah), Katie LeJeune (Mike), Ryan Burks (Jordan), Abby Zoubkov (Mark); great-grandchildren Bennett Bagley, Kyle Bagley, Graham Hodges, Blake Hodges, Elliot Hodges, Liam Hall, Emery Hall, Hadlee Hall, Maggie Machac, Brewer Machac, Everett Machac, Amelia Gunn, Alex Gunn, Claire Gunn, Gracen Glos, Granger Glos, Glos twins coming in June, Baby Zoubkov arriving in March, Natalie Burks and Holly Burks; and her sister Flora Cox of Burkburnett.
