Opal Athaliah Scarbrough Paulk age 102 of Amarillo, died Tuesday January 11, 2011GRAVESIDE SERVICE will be held 2:00 PM SMT Friday January 14, 2011 in Memorial Cemetery, in Melrose, New Mexico with Rev. Rick Parker of United Methodist Church of Melrose. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home 4100 S Georgia St. Amarillo, Texas. Mrs. Paulk was born Opal Athaliah Scarbrough on April 6, 1908 in Sulphur Oklahoma to Richard E. Scarbrough and Rhoda Belle Blocker Scarbrough. As a child, Opal moved to Melrose, NM where she was part of the Melrose ladies state champion basketball team.  She was later the clerk for the city of Melrose, and is noted on the city hall building.  She was a long term resident of Amarillo, having moved here in the early 1950’s.  She worked for Colbert’s until they closed in the late 1980’s. Opal was very active with Saint Paul United Methodist Church and in the Pilot Club of Amarillo for over 40 years.  For many years she hand stitched hundreds of Christmas decorations which were delivered with the Christmas time Meals on Wheels deliveries. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, one sister, and by her son, Jack Lewis Paulk in 1987.   Survivors include her daughter in law, Lynn Paulk; her granddaughter, Mary Allison Henson and husband Ritchy Henson of Amarillo; and two nephews, Wesley Scott Scarbrough and Richard Lee Scarbrough of Arizona.The family suggests memorials be made to Saint Paul United Methodist Church 4317 1-40 West Amarillo, Texas 79106; Don & Sybil Harrington Cancer Center 1500 Wallace Blvd., Amarillo, Texas 79106; American Heart Association 2514 82nd Street Suite B Lubbock, Texas 79423.
