Orland G. Lacer, 89, of Amarillo died May 19, 2013 after living with Parkinson’s disease for 13 ½ years.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, May 22, 2013 in Paramount Baptist Church Sanctuary, 3801 South Western with Dr. Gil Lain and Dr. Chester O’Brien officiating. Entombment will be in Llano Pantheon Mausoleum. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 South Georgia.
Orland was born May 4, 1924 in Yale, Oklahoma to Aura E. Lacer and Ima E. Lacer He attended Wewoka High School prior to joining the U.S. Marine Corps in 1943. He served in the 4th Regiment, 6th Marine Division and participated in the battle of Okinawa where he was injured and was awarded the Purple Heart. He spent three months in the hospital in Saipan and was honorably discharged in 1946. After his discharge he attended Oklahoma State University graduating with a BS degree in Geology in January, 1951. He was employed by Phillips 66 as a Geologist, retiring in 1985 as Director of the Geological Department. He then opened an office as a Consulting Geologist for 25 years.
He always enjoyed playing golf until he was unable to play due to the Parkinson’s disease. He married Lorene Hopkins in Wewoka, Oklahoma on May 27, 1951. They always loved to travel and have visited each state in the United States with the exception of Alaska. They took many trips out of the states having visited approximately 40 different countries.
Orland loved to read and never ceased to love to acquire knowledge about any and every subject. He always emphasized to young people how important it was to get their education and to encourage them. He was always the most generous and kind-hearted person you could ever find. He was always generous in his support to the arts and education.
Orland is survived by his wife, a nephew Stan Lacer and wife Phyllis of Oklahoma City, a niece, Sherrie Vick of Choctaw, Oklahoma, a niece Karen Pappas and husband Paul of El Reno, Oklahoma, a grandnephew, several grandnieces, and cousins .
