Pilo was born February 26, 1941 in McAllen, Tx to Ysidro Ortega and Josephina Ramirez Ortega. He was married to Gumecinda for 35 years. She preceded him in death on April 4, 2002. He was deeply involved in prison ministries, leading men’s groups and teaching them about music and the Bible. He loved to play his guitar for funeral services and weddings. He was a loving, caring man who would go above and beyond what he was called to do. He touched many lives and was a faithful servant of Christ. He was a mentor to many young men involved in area churches. He was also involved in the Cursillo leadership for over 40 years. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and was in leadership on the parish council.
In addition to his wife, he is preceded in death by his brother Jose Ramirez and his sisters, Maria DeSanto, Nustora Ramirez and Soila Garcia.
He is survived by five daughters, Sylvia Ortega, Elizabeth Gonzalez and husband Ramiro, both of Amarillo, Berta Ayala of McAllen, Anatasia DeLaPaz and Norma DeLaPaz, both of San Antonio; two sons, Juan DeLaPaz of San Angelo and Gilbert DeLaPaz of Albuquerque; three sisters, Victoria Rivera and Nina Gonzales, both of Amarillo, Luz Mata of Wisconsin; two brothers, Jesus Ortega of McAllen and Ernestino Ortega of Florida; sixteen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.
