Ralph “Granddad” Holmes Benge Jr. age 92, Amarillo passed away on Sunday.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 27, 2011 in the First Christian Church with Rev. Barry Loving, pastor and Marvin James, Minister, officiating. Burial will be held at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 South Georgia.
Visitation will be Monday, September 26, 2011 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Schooler Funeral Home.
Mr. Benge was born to Ralph H. Benge and Mattie Baird Benge on October 24, 1918 in Texarkana, Arkansas. He was the middle child of three siblings. On March 11, 1940 he married Syble Aleene Lucas, the love of his life, in San Angelo, Texas. Mr. Benge served in the U.S. Navy in the 1940’s. Mr. Benge worked in air conditioning and heating metal work for many years. He also worked for R. M. Wells Company in Quanah, Texas as a sheet metal estimator for approximately 20 years. He worked for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice as a Construction Superintendent for approximately 10 years prior to his retirement in 2000.
His biggest joy was spending time with his family especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He had many special friends in Tascosa Lions club. He was a Lion for 36 years. He has a special place in his heart for his church family of First Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife Syble Benge; daughter, Sandra Hassell and husband Gary of Amarillo; two sons, Holmes Benge and wife Nam Hui of Tacoma, WA and Ray Benge and wife Bobbie of Wright, WY; 8 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.
