Ralph Hill age 94 died Friday, September 12, 2014.
Interment will be at 1:00 PM at Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors provided by “Volleys for Veterans” a memorial service will follow at Central Church of Christ Chapel at 2:00 PM with Elder Warlick Thomas and Mr. Bob Crass officiating. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 South Georgia.
Ralph was born April 27, 1920 in Saline, Arkansas to Jodie and Minnie Hill, one of ten children. He married the love of his life, Hazel Hill in Arkansas in 1940. They had three children, Billy Joe, Danny and Sandra.
Ralph served in the Army during WWII as a member of the engineering corps which built airfields in the South Pacific for Allied aircraft. He and Hazel moved to Amarillo in 1948 where Ralph began working as a sheet metal worker. In 1962 Ralph opened his own business, Hill’s Comfort Air Conditioning and Heating, where he and Hazel worked side by side until retirement in 1985.
Ralph and Hazel were longtime members of Southwest Church of Christ, and he was a current member of Central Church of Christ where he had many friends. He served in the South Amarillo Kiwanis Club for many years.
Everyone who knew Ralph enjoyed his quick smile, cheerful and friendly demeanor and his wonderful sense of humor. His quick wit endeared him to many. Ralph and Hazel enjoyed their family and especially spending time with their grandchildren. They also enjoyed working together, playing “42” and dominoes with friends, traveling and camping.
Ralph was “Pawpaw” to ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
After Hazel’s death in 1987, he married Dorothy Nelson who died in 1998. In addition to his two wives, Ralph was preceded in death by a son, Danny in 1995; a granddaughter Hallie in 2004; four brothers, Sam, Horace, Loyce and Leroy; and two sisters, Ruby and Ratha.
The family will receive visitors at the funeral home tonight from 5:30 PM until 6:30 PM.
He is survived by a son, Bill Hill and wife Cherry of Midland; a daughter, Sandy Matney and her husband Paul of Amarillo; a brother, Clarence Hill of Hot Springs, Arkansas; and two sisters Rachel Sullivan and Rose Ella Barrett, both of California; nine grandchildren, Roxanne Hill, Danny Hill, Shawnna Boren, Marci Garcia, Malee Needham, Makell Matney, Cadie Hill, Elizabeth Hill, Bentley Hill; a special friend and companion, Juanita Tortella; and numerous nieces or nieces.
