Ramon Lloyd Ashley was born July 22, 1928, to Harry and Ann Ashley. He passed away on April 23, 2009. Ray is survived by Helen Hill, the mother of his four children: Diane Ashley, Teri Ashley Baum, Wayne Ashley, and Joyce Ashley Brown; as well as his five grandchildren: James, John, Jason, Desiree and Nathaniel.
Ray graduated from Tufts University in Massachusetts with a Bachelors Degree in Science. His specialty was in Nuclear Physics. He worked and consulted for several companies over his successful career, including Atomics International and Bechtel Corp. Ray was a member of the Board of Directors of the American Nuclear Society and was recognized by them as a fellow for his contribution to Nuclear Science. His greatest achievement was developing a method for heavy reactor shielding to absorb released radiation.
Ray was passionate about coin and stamp collecting and was a self-taught gourmet chef. He spent his post-retirement years writing editorials encouraging the use of safe alternative power sources.
The scientific community will miss his brilliant mind and his friends and family will miss him and his epicurean delights. He will be especially missed by Joann Ashley of Amarillo, Texas.
