SFC Richard Bremer, 86, of Amarillo, died on Friday, December 9, 2016 in Amarillo.
Funeral Services will be at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, December 13, 2016 in the Memory Gardens Mausoleum with Pastor Greg Kinch of South Lawn Baptist Church officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow. Arrangements are with Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia.
Richard was born November 12, 1930 in Flora Township, Boone County, IL., to Fred and Eva Bremer. He was one of ten children.
He joined the Air Force at age 18 and after basic and advanced training was stationed in Japan. Then he was sent to Boston, MA as an assistant to three scientists. In 1955, he came to Amarillo Air Force Base as an instructor and counselor and during this time he met the love of his life, Carol Bloxom. They married on February 6, 1959 and they enjoyed the military life with the family going to all stations allowed for dependents.
Richard changed services in 1961 and joined the Army where he and the family were stationed for three years in Zweibrucken, Germany. While there Richard and Carol were like foster parents to the young men in his squadron by having them over for meals and family time. It was really something to see those young men get down on the floor and play with our daughters, 3 & 5 at the time.
In October 1966, he was stationed in Vietnam as an intelligence NCO until September 1967. His last assignment was the Southeastern Signal School as operations NCO. After suffering two heart attacks and massive damage he received an honorable medical discharge. Richard always took great pride in serving his country.
After retirement, he was among some of the first people fortunate enough to have open heart surgery done by Dr. Henry Martinez. Richard suffered with Alzheimers for the last eight years with his wife, Carol as his care giver and in the last year also his daughter, Kim. He was a kind, gentle person and never met a stranger. He was a Baptist, loved the Lord and loved going to church at South Lawn Baptist Church when he could. Richard was a member of DAV chapter 26. Some of his greatest moments involved his wife, children and grandchildren. He adored them all! Hearing stories of their accomplishments and adventures made him beam with joy.
He was preceded in death by a precious daughter, Andrea (Andi) in 2008, and we know they are together again; also his parents; and nine brothers and sisters. He was the last of the ten children.
Survivors include his wife, Carol; daughters Kim Anderson and Ally Lawton; grandchildren, Erin and Joel Krahn, Ashley and Michael Hicks, Caitlin and Chris Johnson, Lindsey and Marcos Acosta, James and Joshua Killham, and Hailey Lawton; great grandchildren, Shane, Hunter, McKade, Jordan, Hope, Aubree, Jayton and Cain.
A special thanks to Dr. Jon Haddad for the wonderful care he provided, as well as the VA Home Health and BSA Hospice of the Southwest.
The family suggest memorials be made to Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675 or Alzheimer’s Association, 1400 Wallace Blvd., Amarillo, Texas 79106.
WALK SLOWLY DOWN THAT PATH MY LOVE, FOR SOON I WILL FOLLOW YOU.
