Richard Gabel

February 27, 1945 — October 18, 2018

Richard Anthony Gabel (“Dick”), 73, of Amarillo died October 18, 2018.

Visitation will be 5:00-6:00 p.m., Sunday, October 21, 2018 at the funeral home. Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Monday, October 22, 2018 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home.

Richard was born February 27, 1945 in Amarillo to Leo and Anna Gabel (Blume). He attended St. Mary’s Academy and graduated from Price College in 1963. He was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church.

He farmed for many years and his passion for gardening and green thumb could be seen in every plant he tended. He retired in 2015 after 28 years as a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. He enjoyed his customers and looked forward to talking with them every day.

He was an animal-lover, often sharing his milkshakes, playing with, and cuddling his many pets over the years – especially Chubbie and Runt.

He had a big, giving heart and shared it with everyone he knew.

He deeply loved his daughter, Kari, and the two shared a very strong bond from the moment she was born in 1983.

He was the best daddy a daughter could have ever hoped for; a devoted brother, uncle, friend, and neighbor. He will be dearly missed.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Vernon Gabel, John Gabel and Jim Gabel; sisters, Viola Wagner, Dottie LeBlanc, Leona Sexton, and Birdie Frazier.

Richard is survived by daughter, Kari Gabel of Amarillo; 2 sisters, Evelyn Risner of Burleson, and Betty Dudek of Amarillo; and 1 brother, Don Gabel and wife June of Happy.

The family suggest memorials be made to American Heart Association or the ASPCA.
