The family will receive guests on Thursday, January 16, 2025, from 4 pm to 6 pm at Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia Amarillo, Texas. Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 17, 2025, at 1 pm at First Baptist Church of Groom, 407 E. First St, Groom, Texas. Interment will follow in Groom Cemetery.
Rick was born on February 7, 1958, in Amarillo, Texas, to Melville and Delores (Showers) Prather. He grew up in Amarillo and moved to Groom, Texas, his freshman year, where he graduated from Groom High School. On September 27, 1976, he exchanged vows with Sharon Hendrick, and the two set off on their journey as husband and wife.
Rick was a tow truck driver by trade but could do almost anything. He was ready to go no matter the time or day when his phone would ring. He served his community and town as a volunteer firefighter and an E.M.T. He had a servant’s heart and cared for his friends and family. Rick was also a racing enthusiast. He and his son Jason dabbled in dirt track racing, helping friends build cars and even fielding a couple of their own to run.
Rick’s favorite pastime was spending time with his family and friends, no matter what event it was for.
Rick is preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, Tim and Sadie Prather, Harris Showers, and Ruth Bond. Those left to cherish his memories are his beloved wife, Sharon, son Jason Prather, sister Marilyn “Susie” Prather, granddaughters Jordyn and Gracelynn Prather, and his extended family and cherished friends.
