Major Dykstra died Friday at Ussery Roan Texas State Veterans Home in Amarillo. Bob was born October 28, 1936 in Chicago, Illinois to Roy and Henrietta Dykstra. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1954 and retired from service in October 1979 in Tacoma, Washington. Bob and his family owned and operated the Vigo Park, Texas Store from 1971-1976 before moving to Amarillo, then Sierra Vista, AZ., and returning to Amarillo in 1999. He was a member of the VFW Hall-Lucius Penick Post #430; Swisher County Historical Society; and the charter member of the Vigo Park Volunteer Fire Department, for which he was instrumental in forming. After retirement from the Army, he was a carpenter by choice and loved researching military history particularly the Red River War. He was preceded in death by his parents.
SURVIVORS: wife Muriel, son Frank Dykstra and wife Laurie, of Sierra Vista, AZ, a daughter Barbara Green and husband Tim of Long Island, NY, six grandchildren and four brothers.
