Robert Bruce "Bob" Haswell, 90, of Amarillo, died Friday, September 2, 2011.
A private burial service at Memory Gardens will be followed by memorial services at 3 PM, Saturday, September 10, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2525 Wimberly Road. Pastor R. Michael McDowell and Rev. John Wagoner will officiate. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia.
Bob was born January 17, 1921 in Akron, Ohio, to Vivian Daniel and Oleda Smith Haswell. They moved to San Antonio in 1926. He graduated from Brackenridge High School in 1939 and enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1941. He served three years during WW II, two of them in the European Theater, and one year during the Korean War. He married Jewel Willingham in San Antonio in 1943.
Bob retired from City Public Service in 1984 after 43 years of service. In 1987 he moved to Amarillo.
Bob was an active member of the Presbyterian Church, USA, serving as a deacon and elder. Music was one of his favorite activities; he sang in church choirs for over 70 years, gave concerts, and led sing-a-longs at several nursing homes. From 1981 until 2005 he loved being Santa Claus at nursing homes, schools, and private parties. He was a charter resident of Craig Methodist Retirement Community, and was a member of RSVP and the Amarillo Genealogical Society.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Jewel; a daughter, Pamela Haswell of Montreal, Canada; a granddaughter, Nicole Lane of Burlington, NC; two great-granddaughters, Kirsten and Caitlyn Smith; a brother, Arthur B. Haswell of San Antonio; and many friends, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Friday, September 9, from 5:30 to 7:00 at Schooler Funeral Home.
