Mr. Hayes was born February 23, 1916 in Farmersville, Texas to Dr. W.F. Hayes and Hattie L. Hayes. He graduated from East Texas State University with a B.A. Degree.
After graduation he went to work for the Federal Home Loan Bank of Little Rock, Arkansas. He then served on the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, Washington D.C. as a federal examiner of Savings and Loan Associations.
He served as an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War 11. After the war he moved to Amarillo to work for First Federal Savings and Loan Association. After 30 years with First Federal he retired in 1976, at which time he was Executive Vice-President and General Manager.
Over the years he served on several boards including the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce, Better Business Bureau and Down-town Amarillo Unlimited. He served on the Board of Stewards of the Polk Street Methodist Church. He was a long term member of the Downtown Rotary Club.
He served several terms on the Board of Directors of the Texas Savings and Loan League and on many committees of the U.S. Savings and Loan League. He also served on the Board of the Panhandle Heritage Foundation and worked on numerous United Fund drives.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Maxine Shepherd.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Wanda Hayes of Amarillo; grandson Robert Lee Hayes and wife Angela Hayes of Pocahontas, Arkansas; granddaughter Holly Susan Hayes of Redding, California.
