Robert Allen Hinz

Robert Allen Hinz, 94, of Amarillo died peacefully Wednesday, February 23, 2016.

Mr. Hinz was born in Galena, Illinois on October 7, 1921 to William and Jane (Ivey) Hinz.  Robert graduated from East High School in Madison, Wisconsin.  After graduation he attended University of Wisconsin, Madison, briefly before being called to military duty.  He was a veteran of WWII after spending four years in the U.S. Coast Guard.  In 1950, he married Loretta Whipperfurth who preceded him in death in 2000.  Robert was a member of the Steamfitters Local 601 and worked as a steamfitter until he retired in 1985.  Upon his retirement, Robert and Loretta moved to Cherokee Village, Arkansas, until 2000.  Robert became a resident of Amarillo in 2001 to be closer to his sons.  The family wishes to acknowledge and thank the staff at Heritage Convalescent Center for all their hard work and care for Mr. Hinz.

Robert loved all sports.  For many years he played basketball and softball.  He loved watching his children and grandchildren as well.  He was an avid card player, enjoying cribbage and euchre.  He was an active member of PBOE Elks for 54 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; three sisters, Kathryn Johnson, Betty Widen, and Ruth Hinz; and one brother, Bill Hinz.

Robert is survived by two sons, Allen R. ‘Bob’ Hinz and wife Jody of Colorado Springs, CO, and Curtis R. Hinz and wife Diane of Amarillo; one sister, Shirley Leer of Tinley Park, Illinois; four grandchildren, Stacey Nolan and husband Corie of Tuscon, AZ, Robin Hinz of Colorado Springs, CO, Christopher Hinz and wife Brittany of Amarillo, and Jessica Hinz of Plainview; and four great-grandchildren, Reegan, Rylee and Reese Nolan, all of Tuscon, AZ and Heston Hinz of Amarillo.

The family suggests memorials be made to Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch, 600 SW 11th Ave., Amarillo, TX 79101.
