Robert M. “Bob” Walker, member of a pioneer Carson County family, died Tuesday, April 10, 2012. His wife and children were with him. Services will be held Friday, April 13 at 10:00 A.M. . at First Baptist Church Amarillo, Texas with the reverend Corky Holland officiating.
Mr. Walker, son of Otis and Dollie Walker, was born in Amarillo, Texas on August 17, 1921, at his Grandfather and Grandmother’s farm home, which is now the McCartney addition. He grew up three and one-half miles west of Conway, Texas on Old Highway 66 on the Walker family farm that his Grandfather M.G. Walker homesteaded in 1897. He graduated from Panhandle High School in 1939 and attended West Texas State University. He married Elnora Engle of Borger, Texas on December 13, 1941. They celebrated 70 years of marriage in December 2011.
During World War II Mr. Walker served in the United States Army in the European Theater with an infantry division and later with the 48th Medical Attachment of the Second Armored Division. He was with the first American troops entering Berlin and his division helped liberate the Nordhausen Prison, along with another one. His division also received the Belgian Fourragere. Mr. Walker served his country well with a second assignment to Salzburg, Austria with the Occupation Forces in 1952-54, as Chief of Supply for the USFA command.
When Metropolitan Life Insurance moved to Amarillo he worked as an agent and became their General Manager. During that time he taught LUTC at Amarillo, College. Later he was engaged in farming at Conway, where he also owned and operated the Walker Grain Elevator. He was a deacon of the First Baptist Church, an Usher and founding member of the Henry Brown Sunday School Class where he was very active until his health failed. He loved people and often visited the sick and those in the hospital. He was also a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. He and his wife co-ordinated Lay Witness Missions for several years in the 70’s.
Survivors include his wife, Elnora of the home, a son, Robert Milton Walker, Jr. of Houston, two daughters, Shirley Walker Hunt of Ardmore, Oklahoma and Deborah Walker Vassilev of Amarillo; two brothers, Jim Walker of Amarillo and Pat Walker of Pasadena, a sister, Nita Duncan of Ft. Worth; Grandchildren Clint Walker and Sarah Sturm, Angela Apel, Laura and Robert Vassilev; and two great grandchildren, Colin and Luke Sturm and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive visitors in their home.
