Roland Franklin Brasell age 91 went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, November 23, 2014.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Polk Street United Methodist Church. The Rev. Kevin Deckard will officiate. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 South Georgia. Military Honors will be provided by Volleys for Veterans.

Roland was born February 19, 1923 in Desdemona, Texas to Lottie Xantippie Wallace Brasell and John Irvin Brasell. He graduated from Loop High School in 1942 and volunteered for the Army Air Corps immediately. After several months of training, he was shipped to the small island of Biak above New Guinea. The island had an airstrip which allowed it to serve as a point from which cargo, troops, and aircraft could deploy to various points in the war zone. He worked as a glider mechanic, repairing gliders which were being used for transporting military supplies into jungle areas. By the end of 1945, he was honorably discharged attaining the military rank of Tech Sergeant of which he was very proud.

Roland married Pauline Owens in October of 1943. After the war they moved to Seagraves, Texas where Roland worked for a carbon Black plant for some time until he was hired by Southwestern Public Service for whom he worked for thirty one years. He and Pauline spent the bulk of their married life in Denver City, Texas.

Roland was a deacon in the Baptist church in Denver City and also served as an elected member of the city council for six years. They were strong supporters of school and community activities in their home town for many years. In 1975, when SPS built the coal fired electrical plant in Amarillo he and his wife moved to Amarillo where Roland worked as a supervisory at the Harrington Plant until his retirement in 1986.

Upon losing his wife Pauline to cancer a few years after moving to Amarillo he met and married Letha Gail Fedric Green. They spent twenty nine and one half years together traveling extensively. They were able to trivet to all fifty of the United States, all but three of the Canadian Provence’s, several points in Mexico, and even visited Ushiah, the most southern inhabited tip of South America. In all they covered a total of thirty eight countries, visiting many exotic places and meeting numerous, interesting traveling acquaintances.

In Amarillo, Roland was a member of Polk Street United Methodist Church. He was an active member of the Kiwanis Club South of Amarillo for many years and remained interested in their work even after he was no longer able to be active. Also, for several years he delivered for Meals on Wheels, Serving on their board for a few years. Roland enjoyed people. He was always at ease with strangers and made friends easily. He was known and admired for his honesty and integrity. He was an honorable man, well loved by his family and friends. Roland will be long remembered and missed by those who knew him and enjoyed his presence.

Roland is survived by his wife Letha; two daughters Melissa K. and husband Ralph Rogers of Winifred, Montana and Gwen Diane and husband Doug Stanislaus of Coahoma, Texas; one step daughter Dr. D’aun Green of Lubbock; three brothers, Billy, Wayne and Rex Brasell; one sister Juanita Kinder; four sisters-in laws, Betty, Wanda, Eleanor and Bernice; five grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.

The family suggest in lieu of flowers memorials be made to a favorite charity.
