Subsequently, he became a Naval officer in World War II and served in the U. S. Navy amphibious forces as a skipper of an LCT in the South Pacific and later as a communications and supply officer on an LST serving Guam, Okinawa, China, Hong Kong, Manchuria and Japan. After being discharged from active duty in July, 1946, as a Lieutenant JG, he married Marian T. Saunders of Amarillo in 1948.
Roy’s working career began with being the Merchandising and Promotion Manager of KGNC Radio, followed by work in the Advertising Department of the Amarillo Globe News. He then became the manager of Welding Equipment & Supply Company. Finally, he was able to serve the Amarillo community through the Vineyard Insurance Agency for 37 years, retiring in 1989. Roy and Marian were able to travel extensively after his retirement.
Roy was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, the Amarillo Club, and the Palo Duro Club. He served as president of the Amarillo Association of Insurance Agents for two terms and was also president of Westminster Presbyterian Church Men’s Council. He also served on the boards of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Palo Duro Club and Llano Cemetery.
Roy was preceded by Marian, his wife of 60 years who passed away July 19, 2007; his parents; and a sister, Doris Vineyard Hodde.
He is survived by a son, David Vineyard and wife, Linda of Amarillo; and a daughter, Susan Vineyard Bayer and husband, Hans, of St. Louis, Missouri; a niece, Diane Lee Hodde of Brenham. TX; three grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
Roy was known and appreciated for his remarkable memory, gaining a reputation amongst friends and family as a very capable historian. Alongside Marian, he greatly enjoyed showing hospitality to neighbors and friends who would often gather.
