Royce E. Barton, born to W. W. and Eula Mae Barton on July 24, 1935, rose to heaven on September 14, 2013. He was met at heaven’s gate by his son Shannon, his parents, three brothers, Wesley, Pete and George, three sisters, Mae Smith, Ruth Hale and Elsie Vinyard and many friends. Services will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 21, 2013 at St. Stephen United Methodist Church, West Campus with Rev. Jerry D. Raab officiating. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia.
Royce married Lady Bug McLaughlin in 1954 and together they had 3 children. Royce worked for Elkins Fruit Company as a young adult and later pursued a lifelong career as a driver for Yellow Freight System. He married Alice Chavez in 1984. He retired from Yellow Freight after 34 years of service.
Royce loved his children and was devastated at the loss of his son, Shannon in 1972. However, he continued to show his daughters Storm and Julie what it was to be loved unconditionally, to be respected, to speak kindly of others and to respect your elders.
After his retirement Royce took great pride and pleasure in helping his friend Doyle McAnally care for Mr. & Mrs. Shaw’s cattle. He later managed cattle/land on his own, eventually relinquishing the duties to his trusted young friend, Jason.
Royce thoroughly enjoyed the time he was able to spend with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren whether visiting them in Amarillo, going to a Ranger’s game or showing them the cattle and buffalo around his home in Venus. One of his favorite past times was hanging out at the corner store buying lotto tickets and swapping coins.
Daddy will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him...
