Shelley K. “S.K.” Hill, of Amarillo, died on August 25, 2013 at the age of 93.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at Bell Avenue Church of Christ with Mr. Glen Walton and Mr. Dean Whaley officiating. Interment will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 South Georgia.
S.K. was born June 24, 1920, in Iowa Park, Texas, to Sam K. Hill and Jewell S. (Terhune) Hill. S.K. attended school through the 2nd grade in Iowa Park and then moved to Vernon, Texas, to complete the 3rd grade. His dad worked in the oil field and then in 1929 relocated the family to Perryton, Texas, to pursue farming and ranching. S.K. was a student at the Ochiltree town school until 8th grade and then transferred into Perryton. His photograph at one time even graced the halls of the Perryton Museum! S.K. never was too fond of his first name Shelley, being selected by his mother because of the famous poet. She simply wanted him to share the same first initials as his father.
S.K. was enrolled in Amarillo Commercial College in 1940. It was there he met Johnnie Lipp and they later married in October of 1941. They both worked in the historic Fisk Building in downtown Amarillo. S.K. was skilled at accounting and insurance, along with earning a Certified Public Accountant’s certificate. They bought their first duplex home on Louisiana Street at the on-set of World War II. After reporting twice for duty to Oklahoma City, results of S.K.’s physical test proved him ineligible for service. S.K. and Johnnie built a home in Ochiltree County in 1942 and lived there until 1985 when they retired to Amarillo. While S.K. farmed and ranched, Johnnie worked for Haliburton and then served 20 years as the secretary for the Perryton ISD Superintendent.
S.K. and Johnnie loved the Lord. S.K. possessed a special talent for studying and teaching the Bible. They were longtime faithful members of the Perryton Church of Christ. Upon arrival in Amarillo, they worshipped with the Southwest congregation and in later years placed membership at the Bell Avenue congregation. They loved their church family. Johnnie was baptized by Curtis Camp and S. K. was baptized at age 14 by A.C. Williams. S. K. and Johnnie both loved nature and the outdoors, traveling, animals and farming. S. K. was even a talented pilot.
S. K. and Johnnie were never blessed with children of their own. This, coupled with the fact that Johnnie’s mother died when she was only 4 years old, began a long tradition of helping children in need. The Hill’s were ardent supporters of the kids living at High Plains Children’s Home in Amarillo. The Administration Building located at the main entrance to the Home on South Western Street bears the name “Hill Headquarters @ High Plains” in honor of S. K. and Johnnie.
S. K. was preceded in death by his wife, a brother Melton Hill and a sister Avanelle Hill Word. He is survived by one brother, Darrell L. Hill of Joplin, Missouri, along with his beloved nieces and nephews.
Memorials are suggested to High Plains Children’s Home and Family Services, Inc., 11461 S. Western Street, Amarillo, Texas, 79118.
The Family will receive friends from 6:00PM to 7:00PM Tuesday, August 27 at the funeral home.
