Sister Mary Frances Dembeck, a member of the School Sisters of St. Francis in Panhandle, Texas, died Friday, April 29, 2016, at the age of 78. Rosary was said at 7 PM Tuesday, May 3, at Our Lady of the Angels Chapel in Panhandle (Convent chapel). The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 3:00 PM on Wednesday, May 4, at the same chapel in Panhandle with Father Ron Mathews as the celebrant. Burial will be in the Panhandle Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia.
Sister Mary Frances was born Joan Marie Dembeck on January 14, 1938 in Baltimore, Maryland. She was born to Theodore and Leona Byczynski Dembeck. She is preceded in death by her parents and by her brother, Richard. Sister is survived by her sister-in-law, Nancy Dembeck, her niece Christine (David) Pitcovich, her nephew, Philip Dembeck, and by several cousins and great-nieces.
Sister Mary Frances entered the School Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis in 1954. She made her final vows in 1964 and celebrated her Golden Jubilee in 2014. Sister was an accomplished teacher, having taught in Catholic schools in the Texas cities of Borger, Dumas, Dalhart, Levelland, San Antonio, and Port Lavaca. Being with children was her greatest joy. She retired in 2003 from active teaching due to health issues but continued to participate in the community’s dedication to education in many ways, especially through prayer. Sister Mary Frances was engaged in child care at the Catholic Children’s Home in Panhandle in the years just prior to the Home’s closing. She will be remembered as a religious who loved her vocation and her years in the classroom.
