Steve was born in Brookline, MA to Paul M. Gens and Ruth (Brenner) Gens. He was a graduate of Clark University in Worcester, MA. Steve was the loving husband of Fredricka (Stahl) Gens of Boston.
Steve is a veteran of the United States Coast Guard. He was an officer and member of The Board of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Massachusetts chapter for over twenty years. For several years, he was the owner and publisher of the Cape Cod Illustrated, in Hyannis, MA. In 1975 Steve became the director of public and government relations for Cabot Corporation’s Energy Group, first in Boston and then in Amarillo. After retiring from Cabot, Steve became the President of the Amarillo Medical Center, renamed the Harrington Regional Medical Center. In 2000 he retired from the medical center. In 2004, he became the first Gene Edwards Executive-in-Residence at West Texas A&M University’s College of Business
Steve was Chairman of the Amarillo College Foundation Board; served on the Amarillo Symphony Board; and was a founding member of Amarillo Opera. Steve was president of Temple B’nai Israel.
Steve loved living in the Texas panhandle and embraced fully the cowboy lifestyle. He was, as he put it, the last Jewish American Cowboy. He loved his family and was proud of each one of their accomplishments. He valued all the friendships he and Fredricka had; as friends were a central part of their lives. His sense of humor was witty and his perspective on the world was, simply put, what is…is.
Steve was dedicated to his family, friends and community. He looked after everyone as if they were the most important person. He loved to share his humor and up-beat attitude wherever he went. His emails always ended with the words of encouragement, “be well and persevere!”
Steve is survived by his wife, Fredricka (Stahl) Gens of Amarillo; his daughter Rebecca Gens of Amarillo; his son Mark Gens of Los Angeles; his grandson Matthew (Bunce) Kim and his husband Jong Kim of Hardwick, MA; his granddaughter Hillary (Bunce) Green and her husband Peter Green and their two children, Steve’s great-grandchildren, James Bunce and Lillian Bunce-Green of Amarillo.
