Susan Mount

Susan Sanford Mount, 80, of Amarillo died Wednesday, January 9, 2013.

Memorial services will be held at 3:00 pm Sunday in St. Stephens United Methodist church with the Reverend Jim Smith officiating. A short reception will follow at the Amarillo Country Club in the Acacia-Vista room. A private burial service will be held Saturday afternoon. Arrangements are by Schooler funeral home.

Born on May 22, 1932,  Susan was the eldest child of Margaret Irvin Sanford and Harrison Elliot Sanford. Susan was born of panhandle pioneer stock. Her mother's ranching family moved to the panhandle in the 1800's and to Amarillo in the early 1900's. The town of Sanford, Texas was named for her grandfather Mack Sanford.

Susan grew up in a close and loving family with her parents and her brother, Dorset Sanford.

She attended Margaret Wills Elementary, Central Junior High and graduated from Amarillo High School in 1950. Following high school, she attended Monticello College in Godfrey, Illinois.

The friendships she made in school remained a constant source of pleasure to her throughout her life; in fact, she continued to meet monthly on birthdays for lunch with a close group of women whose friendships dated back to her school age years.

In 1951, Susan married Joseph Chambers Richardson, Jr, with whom she had three children, Joseph Chambers III, Mary Lynn, and Elise.

In 1996, she married Walter Scott Mount Jr., a life long friend of Susan's. They were married for 16 years.

Susan was a hometown girl who lived in Amarillo her entire life and poured herself back into the community through many different philanthropic efforts which enriched the lives of so many.

She was charter and devoted member of St. Stephens United Methodist church.

Susan was a sustaining member of the Junior League of Amarillo and also led as the  president. She was a member of the Women's Club, Amarillo Garden Club, PEO Chapters AN and CV. She also served as Chairman of the Amarillo Symphony.

Susan was an accomplished tennis player who was the state runner up in 1948 and 1949. She had a passion for needle point and created countless masterpieces that have been enjoyed by many.

She was selected by Governor Bill Clements to serve on the Texas Board of Tourism
Susan suggested and was instrumental in implementing the "Welcome to Texas" sign program that are enjoyed in every highway entrance into Texas.

The world was a kinder and gentler place with Susan in it. Her positive outlook and appreciation of those around her was inspiring. Her kind words were often shared by a handwritten note in her distinctive meticulous penmanship.

Susan loved to be with her friends and enjoyed people. If it was possible, she never missed a party. She was kind, gracious, benevolent, generous and thoughtful. She left her beautiful presence wherever she had been.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a nephew Selwyn McQuin "Mack" Sanford 2008 and  a step-son Walter Scott Mount III in 2005.

She is survived by her husband Walter Mount. She is also survived by a son, a daughter in law, two daughters, two son in laws, seven grandchildren, one great grand daughter her brother; two nieces and one nephew and two step children and their families. These include her son, Joe C. Richardson III and wife Tara of Amarillo TX; Joe's two children Kate Richardson Binion and husband Shane of Fort Worth and James of Amarillo; a daughter Mary Lynn "Mel" Holder and husband Ladd of Ft. Worth TX and her two children Elise Montgomery and her child Isabelle Montgomery and Alice Johnson of Amarillo TX; a daughter Elise Wilkes and husband Tom Wilkes of Atlanta GA and their children Tommy Wilkes of Houston TX, Jenny Wilkes of Dallas TX, and Matthew Wilkes of Atlanta GA; a brother Dorset Sanford of Santa Fe, NM and his children Debbie Slaughter of Frisco TX, Katherine Potts of Amarillo TX, and Yates Sanford of Amarillo TX and a stepson, Laurence Edward Mount and wife Marylyn and a step daughter Marjorie Seewald and her husband Stan Seewald of  Farmington, New Mexico.

The family suggests memorials be made to St Stephens United Methodist Church, Olivia's Angels and Texas Star Oak or charity of choice.
