A funeral mass will be celebrated at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, November 8 at St. Mary’s Cathedral Church with Msgr. Harold Waldow officiating. Burial will be at Llano Cemetery.
TC was born August 25, 1925 in Walnut Springs, Texas, to TC Gardner, Sr. and Julia Lyles. He married Marie Funk and they were married almost 42 years until her passing in 1990. Toby served in the U.S. Navy and fought in WWII in the Battle of Iwo Jima. After the Navy, he spent most of his adult life as a railroader with the Santa Fe Railroad where he was employed as a conductor until his retirement.
He enjoyed golf, fishing, dancing and country music. He was a fan of the U.T. Longhorns and the Dallas Cowboys. He had many good friends and enjoyed meeting up with them at Amarillo’s Golden Light. Toby was an avid volunteer with Catholic Family Services and the Meals on Wheels program. He found great joy in delivering birthday flowers to his Meals on Wheels recipients. He was a devoted family man who was loved by many and he will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by two sons, TC “Toby” Gardner, III & wife Terri, and Dennis Gardner & wife Vicki all of Amarillo; two daughters, Debbie Ray & husband Philip of Huntsville, AL and Janet Carter & husband Steven of Clarendon; one brother, Bill Gardner & wife Beth of Joshua, TX; 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
