Thomas Howard Norris

August 15, 1926 — April 24, 2013

Thomas “Howard” Norris, age 86, formerly of Amarillo died April 24, 2013 in Lewisville, TX.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 27th at 11:00 AM at Schooler Funeral Home, Brentwood Chapel.  Steve Patterson will officiate.   Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery.  Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia, Amarillo, Texas.

Howard was born August 15, 1926 in Carbon, TX, the son of Henry and Artie Norris, and was raised in Fort Worth, TX.  After graduating from Fort Worth's Polytechnic High School in 1944, he attended Texas A&M University and then enlisted in the U.S. Army. From 1944 to 1945 he served in the Army's Company C Tank Destroyer division during the end of WWII.  Howard received an honorable discharge from the Army and then attended his beloved University of Texas.  After attending school, he worked for General Mills for many years and married Patsy Bennett, who preceded him in death in July 2010. He was also preceded in death by his grandson, Braden Patterson, in August 2002.

Howard was a successful Amarillo businessman.  He owned and operated several different establishments in the hospitality industry including "The Embers Steakhouse" and "The Old Steak Barn."  He also owned several Quarter Horses that raced on the Oklahoma and New Mexico circuits.  Howard liked to stay busy and was not afraid of trying something new, so in 2004 he returned to Fort Worth where two of his daughters and their families were living.  He never met a stranger and called all his buddies ‘pard’.  He enjoyed visiting with friends and family, loved fishing, watching football - especially the Texas Longhorns - and telling stories from his "glory days".

The family will receive friends on Friday, April 26th from 5-7 pm at the funeral home.

Howard leaves five daughters: Shelley Hatcher and husband Russell of Memphis, TN; Kim Turrel and husband Greg of Lewisville; Toni Fewox and husband Tom of Spring; Stacie Knezek and husband Ken of Southlake; and Tracie Patterson and husband Steve of Amarillo; He also leaves a brother, Jack Norris of Amarillo; and eight grandchildren.

The family requests memorial donations be made to Higher Focus Ministries, P.O. Box 52084, Amarillo, TX 79159 or to Alzheimer's Panhandle, 1400 Wallace Blvd., Amarillo, TX 79106.
