On November 19, 2013, Velma Ladena Stanton, 90, finished her visit to Earth, and continued on to her eternal life with Christ, after a valiant battle with vascular dementia and suffering two broken hips.
Velma was the daughter of M. V. and Mary Whitten, born April 30, 1923 in Chillicothe. She had a deceased half-sister, Pearl Knowles. Velma married the love of her life, Leo Earl Stanton, in 1941, and during 65 years of marriage, they had two children, Bobby G. Stanton and Judy Dendy. Leo went home to Jesus in 2006.
Velma was a faithful wife, loving and caring daughter, the best mother, and an amazing Christian woman. She was a homemaker who could manufacture a gorgeous outfit on a sewing machine in one afternoon, cook a delicious meal and design beautiful crafts to serve as décor, while still driving a school bus throughout the ranches of Potter County, delivering children to four respective schools.
Velma loved her family and cared for her grandchildren wholeheartedly. She especially loved working for her Lord Jesus, teaching “primary children” in many churches in the Amarillo area while serving as Leo’s helpmate and pastor’s wife. Later in life, she taught the oldest woman’s class at Trinity Baptist Church, loving to minister to them with God’s word, delicious home cooked treats and gifts of her handmade crafts.
After Leo’s death, Velma went to live in the independent apartments of Craig Retirement Center, where she met her best friend, Wayne Thompson, who has been a faithful visitor during her last year of battling vascular dementia.
She is survived by son Bobby G. Stanton and wife, Dawana, of Georgetown, Texas, and daughter Judy Dendy and her husband Jerry Dendy. Also surviving her are four grandchildren, Lara Stanton Lester of Georgetown, Texas and her husband Brett and their three children Brian, Shelby and Logan; Tera Johnson Mireles of San Antonio, Texas and her husband Johnny and their three children Jordan, AJ and Nicholas; Derek Johnson of Amarillo, Texas, and his wife, Lauren; and Jeff Johnson of Amarillo, Texas and his wife, Cierra, and their two children, Brandon and Charli. Sae Jin Kang of Korea was also a loved “grandson” during his time in the USA.
Services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 20, 2013, in Brentwood Chapel at Schooler Funeral Home with her Pastor, Jeff Messer of Childers Place, officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia.
Bobby and Judy would like to thank Brenda, Cassandra and Kim at Quality Home Care for their loving and excellent care of Velma during her last illness, and the caregivers of both Childers Place and Craig Retirement Village for their support throughout her living at those facilities.
The family suggests that memorials be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 415 W. 8th Avenue, Suite 300, Amarillo, TX 79101.
