Verna Dennis Thompson, 97, passed away July 9, 2010. Funeral Services will be at 2:00 p.m. M.S.T. Monday, July 12, 2010 in Prairie Haven Memorial Park Chapel in Hobbs, NM.  Burial will be in Prairie Haven by Schooler Funeral Home, Amarillo and Chapel of Hope in Hobbs.Verna was born April 9, 1913 in Palo Pinto County, TX to Bert and Bertha Edwards Porter.  The oldest daughter of 13 children, Verna grew up tending her siblings where they all picked cotton on the family farm and in Wheeler County, TX where she met Orval Lee Thompson.  They married on February 14, 1933 in Sayre, OK.  Verna and Orval made their home between Magic City and Kellerville, where they raised two children, Glenda Gwyn Thompson Bell and Luther Andrew Thompson.  In 1954, the family moved to Hobbs, NM where Verna lived for 51 years.  In 2005, she moved to Amarillo, TX to be near her daughter.  Verna was a wonderful mother, grandmother, sister, neighbor, and friend to people of all ages.  She loved to cook, crochet, and garden, and earned Yard of the Week at age 87 while living in Hobbs.  She loved many and many loved her, especially her family to whom she was devoted.  “Momo” believed most bumps on life’s road could be made a whole lot easier with a good chocolate pie.She was predeceased by her husband, Orval, in 1979 and an infant son, in 1948.Survivors include her sister, Sue Sherrod and husband Bob, of Stephenville, TX, her son, Luther Thompson and wife Sherry, of Brownwood, TX, her daughter, Glenda Bell and husband Bob, grandson Dwight Smith, granddaughter Leslie Smith Weaver and husband Jack, and great-grandson Alex, all of Amarillo, TX, grandson Mike Thompson and wife Susan of Derby, KS, grandson Randy and wife Wendy, great-grandson Andrew and great-granddaughter, Katelyn, all of Allen, TX, and step-granddaughter Robyn Wilkes, of Bradenton, FL.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial to Plum Creek Specialty Hospital, 5601 Plum Creek Drive, Amarillo, TX 79124 or Odyssey Hospice, 6900 I-40 West, Suite 150, Amarillo, TX, 79106.
