Virgie was born on July 18, 1929 in Castro County to her parents W.S. Bill and Mabel Akin Cooper. She attended Dimmitt High School where she was the Football Queen, President of the Press Club, Manager of the girls Basketball Team, and member of the Bobcat Tales Staff, F.H.A. and the Pep Squad. She graduated in 1947.
Virgie was the epitome of a homemaker, caring for her family and working in positions that allowed her to raise her two children, Karen and Joe. She babysat for family and friends and worked in the school system so she could be off with the kids in the afternoons and summers. She was a devoted mother to her children. Virgie loved to cook and host family gatherings. She loved to sew and quilt, do puzzles and play dominoes. Virgie loved to garden, she a “green thumb”. Her favorite flowers were yellow roses and pansies. Virgie loved to travel to Hawaii, Spain and Alaska. She loved serving her church, where she went on a mission trip to Ecuador.
Later in life she worked as a courier for the Amarillo Diagnostic Clinic until she was eight five years old, just retiring in 2014.
The family would like to thank Virginia Green and staff at her group home, the Kindred Hospice Staff and her dear friend and caregiver, Linda Pickens.
Virgie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bob Sheffy; a sister, Marilee Elledge; a brother Billy Cooper; and by a step-brother Butch Cooper.
She is survived by her daughter, Karen Fox and husband James Richard; by her son, Joe Ryan Gibson and his wife Keila all of Amarillo; a sister Elsie Maxwell of Florida; four grandchildren, Ryan and Tyler Gibson and Jim and Jennifer Fox; several great grandchildren; and many other loving family members and friends.
