Virgil Thomas Barker, age 93, of Amarillo, died Thursday, August 2, 2012 in Amarillo.
Graveside services will be held at 10:00 AM, August 8, 2012 in Llano Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel with Carolyn Nuthman, Chaplain of Hospice Care of the Southwest officiating. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia.
Mr. Barker was born January 13, 1919 in Boswell, OK. He moved to Amarillo in 1939 from Waco, TX. After attending Amarillo Junior College, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and reached the rank of Machinist’s Mate 1st Class. Following his years in the Navy, he and his father, Cecil Barker, owned and operated Barker Machine Shop for 28 years.
After retirement, Mr. Barker became an avid golfer. He also became very skilled at crafting and leading stained glass, which family members and many friends are still enjoying. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Era Barker; his sister, Ruby Barker Boyd; and first wife, Bettie Barker, who died in 1992.
Survivors include his wife, Frances (Dolly) of Amarillo; two daughters, Janie Patterson of Houston, TX, and Nancy Rath of Tulsa, OK; one son, Joe Wicker of Tucson, AZ; two brothers, Jim Barker of Sacramento, CA, and Mel Barker of Olympia, WA; five grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials to be sent to a favorite charity or Hospice Care of the Southwest.
