Visitation will be from 6 – 8 p.m. Monday, November 30, 2009, Schooler Funeral Home, Brentwood Chapel. Funeral Service will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at Schooler Funeral Home, Brentwood Chapel with Marty Hamrick officiating. Burial will be at Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 South Georgia.
Andy was born to Walter Lee Hester and Alice Theodore Hester (Robinson) and lived his entire life in Amarillo. He graduated from Amarillo High School in 1939. He then served in the Army Air Corp in Europe as an aerial photographer during WWII.
He married Vera Gean Bumpers in 1949. They had 2 children, Mark and Malcolm. His wife, Gean and son, Malcolm both preceded him in death. He married Shirley J. Elkins in 1983. Shirley and Andy were very active volunteers at the Senior Citizens Center and VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Association).
Andy owned Pope Photos Records during the 1960’s and then was employed for over 20 years at West Texas State University as a sports photographer and photography instructor. Upon retiring, he bought several acres of land which he farmed. He was a long time member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his son, Mark and wife Diane of Lacey, Wa; daughters Ann Dunavin and husband, Chester of Amarillo, and Lyn Elkins of Santa Fe, N.M.; brother, Berry and wife Pat of Hewitt, Tx, their sons J.R. and Gilbert; and 5 grandchildren, Deidra, Desirae, Don, Colin and Tandy.
The family requests memorials be made to the Senior Citizens Center, 1220 S. Polk, Amarillo, Tx 79101 or Meals on Wheels, 219 SW 7th, Amarillo, Tx 79101, in lieu of flowers.
