Walter Bruce Hite, 83, of Amarillo died Sunday September 1, 2013.
Services will be at 2 pm on Wednesday Sept 4th at Paramount Baptist Church Building B, 3801 Western with Chaplain Merrell Gilbert officiating, arrangements by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S Georgia. Entombment will be in Memorial Park Mausoleum with Masonic Rites.
Walter Bruce was born June 9, 1930 in Wellington, Texas to G. Bruce and Modell Hite. Bruce is survived by his wife of 59 years, LaRue Mooney Hite, a daughter Sandra Jean Horton of Waco, twin sons Matthew and Marcus Hite of Amarillo, 7 grandchildren: Laura Babbitt of Houston Michael Gray of Waco, Ruthie Lumpkin, Aurora Shipley, Lucas Hite, Elizabeth Hite, William Hite all of Amarillo, a great granddaughter Clara Babbitt of Houston, a special sister-in-law Georgia Ann Hite of Edmond, OK, a special niece Kimberly Hite of Amarillo and a host of friends, family and loved ones.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Meta Belle and 2 brothers Billy Joe Hite and Guthrie Lee Hite.
Staff Sgt Hite served in the Air Force during the Korean War from 1949-1952. Bruce married Betty LaRue Mooney on December 14, 1953 in Childress, TX. Bruce served with the Amarillo Police Department from Jan 1959 to Feb 1991. Bruce loved to travel and drove charter busses for Continental Trailways for several years. However, his favorite mode of travel was a motorcycle; he rode a bike from 1949 until 2012, traveling all over the United States. Grampa’s workshop was always open for his kids and grandkids when they wanted help with any project large or small.
Bruce was a member of the Paramount Baptist Church, Boy Scouts of America, NRA, American Legion, Khiva Shrine--Cycle Escort, 32nd Scottish Rite Mason, and VFW.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorials be sent to the Shriners Travel Fund, 305 S E 5th, Amarillo, TX 79101 or the Amarillo Activity Youth Center, 816 S. Van Buren, Amarillo, TX 79101
