Rosary will be recited at 7:00 PM on Friday, August 21 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 22 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 South Georgia.
Walt was born August 12, 1942, in Buffalo, NY to Walter and Stella Piskun. He attended Canisius High School and College before being appointed to the US Military Academy at West Point. He graduated in 1966 and went into the intelligence corps. Walt was an Army Ranger. He saw combat in Viet Nam and received the Purple Heart medal, combat infantryman badge, and the Bronze star. He attended the Univ. of Hawaii School of Medicine and was the president of the first graduating class of Texas Tech University School of Medicine in Lubbock. He trained in neurosurgery at Wilford Hall Air Force Medical Center in San Antonio. After his military retirement, he worked in Modesto, CA for Gould Medical Foundation and then moved to Amarillo in 1994. He retired from medical practice in 2008. Walt was a long-time member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church.
He enjoyed all sports, especially golf and basketball. He played varsity baseball, basketball and football while at West Point. His basketball team at West Point, coached by Bobby Knight, participated in the NIT Tournament in 1965 and 1966. He was a Buffalo Bills and St. Louis Cardinal fan to the end.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Dr. Mary Ann Piskun; six children, Jennifer Piskun Johnson and husband Sam of Austin, Christopher W. Piskun of Philadelphia, PA, Sally Piskun Berg and husband Justin of Boulder, CO, Molly Piskun of Los Angeles, CA, Betsy Piskun of Austin and A. J. Piskun of Lodi, CA; five grandchildren, Luke, Gus, Ella, Page and Lily; aunts, Genevieve Bak and Ruth Srotzyk of Buffalo, NY and many friends throughout the country.
The family wishes to express their thanks and gratitude to all of the medical staff at BSA Hospital and BSA Hospice, along with the numerous other doctors and nurses for their care and concern for Walt during his final illness.
