Death claims Walter W Shuman Jr after a short illness, 86 years old on December 21, 2014. He was born on June 26, 1928.
Memorial services will held at the Covenant Fellowship Church, 8501 Coulter Street, Amarillo, TX on Monday, December 22 at 11AM, with the Rev Steve Gaines and Rev Don Travis officiating. Service arrangements by Schooler Funeral Home. Interment with private family burial will be at Dreamland Cemetery, Canyon, TX.
Following graduation from high school at Levelland, TX in 1945, he enlisted in the US Navy. As a veteran of WW II, he served with the 3rd Sea Bea Battalion and CBD 1156 in the South Pacific during the two Atomic Bomb tests in 1946. After his discharge he attended both Texas Tech and Wayland Baptist College. He served as a supply officer for the US Army Reserve Headquarters in Lubbock, TX for eight years then moved to Amarillo, TX in 1960. The next twenty-six years were spent in the food and lodging industry with the Trade Winds Motels, Hyatt Corporation and as Co-Owner, General Manager of the Best Western Villa Inn of Amarillo.
He served as President, Director or Member of several business and civic organizations including Panhandle Motel Association, Texas Motel/Hotel Association, Board of Convention and Visitors Activities of the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce, Better Business Bureau, Amarillo East Rotary Club, Amarillo Jaycees and Group Commander Texas Wing of the Civil Air Patrol. During the nineteen years with the CAP, he flew and participated in numerous search and rescue missions. He is a member of the Disabled American Veterans and Covenant Fellowship Church. For many years he and his group of Country Western musicians, the Half Price Band has entertained the Amarillo Nursing Homes and Retirement Centers in the Panhandle.
After retiring from business he became a Deputy for Potter County Sheriff’s Department, as a regular for five years and as a reservist for another five years, retiring in December 1997.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Terri in July 2005. Survivors include three children, one son, Bruce Carter of Amarillo, two daughters, Marsha Mauldin and husband Bill of Fort Smith, AR, Claudette Bagot and husband Richard of Amarillo, nine grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, 6 great/great grandchildren, one brother, Louis Shuman and wife Kay of Mermatau, LA, and a sister, Lois Shields of Lubbock, TX, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
