Wayne was born on August 28, 1937 in Muenster, TX to his parents Al and Evelyn Otto Schmitt. He grew up there and graduated from Muenster High School. Upon graduating, Wayne moved to Colorado where he worked as a telegrapher for the Union Pacific Railroad for several years before continuing his education at Texas Tech. He graduated with a marketing and advertising degree.
He and Myra were married in Amarillo at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church on January 29, 1966. The family soon grew with the birth of their two daughters, Julia and Jennifer. During this time Wayne had a career in the printing business. In 1993 he and Myra formed Southwest Sales Promotion. Wayne and Myra were founding members of St. Thomas, he was involved in many different church activities including being a sponsor for RCIA. Wayne was a devoted, strong man who built his life on faith. He was dependable, steadfast and encouraging, it was these attributes that would guide the family through one of the most devastating events a family could endure, the loss of their daughter Jennifer, in 1991.
Wayne and Myra had a love for travel and were fortunate enough to travel all over the world. The couple especially enjoyed Costa Rica, a place they visited several times.
He loved to fly both single engine airplanes and gliders. He spent many hours flying and was a flight instructor. He received the FAA Wright Brothers “Master Pilot” Award.
