Werner Fredrick Mundt, of Amarillo, passed away March 19, 2012.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 23, in Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church with Pastor Stephen Friedrich officiating. Burial will follow at 3:30 p.m.in Sayer Doxey Cemetery, Sayre, OK. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia.
Werner was born on September 21, 1931 in Deshler, Nebraska to Fred and Beata Mundt. He graduated from Jr. College in 1950 from St John’s in Winfield, Kansas. In 1954, he graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and an NROTC Commission as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy. On December 27, 1954 he married the love of his life, Dorothy Jean Shelley. He dedicated 24 years of service until his retirement in 1977 as a Commander. During his time in the Navy, he proudly served as a naval aviator. At his 1st duty station, he patrolled the Northern Atlantic for submarines. He flew in a hurricane squadron and VP-21 Airborne early warning squadron. Later he served two years on the USS Yorktown as a weapons officer. He also taught at the Naval Academy during which time he earned an MBA from George Washington University. His second career was with Pantex as a manufacturing engineer until his retirement in 1997 after 20 years.
Werner was a charter member of MOAA and served as the treasurer with the organization. He and his wife attended Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church where he was a substitute organist for several years. He enjoyed golf, bridge, traveling, and OU football. He was a dedicated family man and loved spending time with his grandsons. He will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred & Beata Mundt, his parents in law, Harry & Dollie Shelley and his son, Frederick Richard “Rick” Mundt.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dorothy Shelley Mundt; a daughter, Shelley Mullarkey and husband Steve of Katy, TX; two grandsons, Kyle and Craig Mullarkey; a twin brother, Willis Mundt and wife Dorothy of Green Valley, AZ; niece Carla Mundt of Omaha Nebraska and nephew Philip Mundt of Chapel Hill, N. Carolina; an aunt, Louise Coogan of Sayer, OK and many cousins and friends.
