Dr. Wilbert Ewing Scott, 99, formerly of Amarillo, died in Dallas on Thursday, February 27, 2014.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, March 10, 2014, at Llano Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel, 2900 S. Hayes. Dr. Murray Gossett of First Presbyterian Church will officiate. Inurnment will be at Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St.
Dr. Scott, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbert E. Scott, Sr., was born in Prescott, Arizona on September 23, 1914. Dr. Scott graduated from Prescott High School in 1932. He then graduated from Monmouth College, Monmouth, Illinois with a B.S. degree in 1936 and Northwestern University Medical School with a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1941. During his college career, he was a member of Sigma Omicron Mu Scholastic fraternity, Alpha Kappa Kappa medical fraternity and Pi Kappa Epsilon honorary medical fraternity. He served his internship at Evanston Hospital, Evanston, Illinois and residency at Emory University Hospital, Atlanta, Georgia.
World War II interrupted Dr. Scott’s medical career. From 1941 to 1946, he served in the US Army Medical Corps in North Africa and Italy, receiving three medals with two Bronze Stars and achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
In 1947, Dr. Scott began practicing internal medicine in Amarillo, Texas. He was a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. Dr. Scott was active in the Amarillo and State of Texas medical communities. He served as President of the Potter-Randall Medical Society; the Texas Society of Internal Medicine; the Medical and Dental Staff of Northwest Texas Hospital; and the Medical and Dental Staff of High Plains Baptist Hospital. Dr. Scott was an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at the Texas Tech Medical School. He retired from private practice in December 1986, but continued working as a staff physician at the Veterans’ Administration Hospital from 1987 to 1992.
Dr. Scott was an active member and elder of First Presbyterian Church. After his retirement, he volunteered at the Amarillo Garden Center and at the church. He was a charter member of the Amarillo Club.
Dr. Scott was preceded in death by Alice, his wife of 62 years, in October, 2002. He then moved to Dallas to be with family.
Survivors include a son, Philip Scott of Austin; his daughter, Kay Hibbetts and husband, Jim; granddaughter, Kimberly Hibbetts; grandson, Chris Hibbetts and his wife, Traci and great grandson, Tyler Hibbetts, all of Dallas.
