Wilma Ilene Carter

April 18, 1928 — June 29, 2012

Ilene Carter, 84, of Amarillo died June 29, 2012.  A memorial service will be held Sunday, July 1, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. at the Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia, Amarillo, with Pastor Mike Nuthman of Hillside Christian Church officiating.
Ilene was born April 18, 1928, in Burneyville, OK, to Hughie Isaac and Bessie Edna Bentley.  She graduated from Amarillo High School in 1945 where she met the love of her life, Jim Dan Pavillard.  They married in 1945 and had three children—Kay Kesterson of Amarillo; Dan Pavillard and wife, Cindy, of Amarillo;  and Debra Stein and husband, John, of Dallas.  Ilene is preceded in death by son-in-law, Joe Kesterson, of Amarillo.  Ilene is survived by all of her immediate family, as well as two younger sisters, Lona Chilton of Amarillo, and Maurine Bray of Laguna Vista, TX.
Although Ilene had many interests, none were more important to her than family and motherhood.  With 3 children, 9 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and 9 great, great grandchildren, “Gammy” was the cherished matriarch and crown jewel of her large family.  Her amazing strength, wisdom, quick wit and support were her greatest gifts to her loved ones.
After receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree from West Texas State University, Ilene earned her master’s degree in Spanish Education from the Universidad de Monterrey, Mexico.  Her professional teaching career began with 7 years at Gruver High School followed by 35 plus years in Amarillo ISD in the Homebound Department.  Her caring wisdom touched and changed so many young lives.  Always the devoted mentor, her passion for education reached well beyond the covers of a textbook.
An accomplished woman, Ilene was much more than stunningly beautiful.  With her many talents, she enriched her life and others with her passionate love of the arts.  Blessed with a golden voice, music always put a smile on her face.  She loved the languages, literature, painting, and travelling.
Whether her role was Cub Scout den mother, PTA or Adelante Club president, classroom teacher, or just “Mom”, Ilene excelled.  As Ilene, Mother, Mom, Sister or Gammy, her loved ones will miss her terribly.  Her family is so blessed to have shared the joys of her life and love, and are forever grateful for the many wonderful memories.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Amarillo Adult Literacy Council, 2222 S. Harrison  St., Amarillo, TX  79178, or to Meals on Wheels, 219 SW 7th Avenue, Amarillo, TX 79101, would be appreciated.
