David Wayne Wilkerson

David Wayne Wilkerson, 55, passed away on March 9, 2017, in Amarillo.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday, March 15th at 10:00 AM at St. Stephen United Methodist Church, 4600 S. Western. Dr. Stan Cosby will officiate. Military honors will be provided by the Volleys for Veterans and The Patriot Guard Riders. A private family inurnment will be at a later date.  Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 South Georgia.

David was a beloved son, husband, father and brother. He was born in Amarillo on July 9, 1961, to JD and Pat Wilkerson. David grew up in Amarillo. In 1973, his dad’s job with Bell Helicopter moved the family to Iran and they returned to Amarillo in 1979.

David graduated from Caprock High School in 1980. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1981 and was stationed at Jacksonville, Florida Naval Air Station. He was attached to the P-3 aircraft and did tours in Europe, Sicily and Beirut. David and his Dad always picked on each other because he never spent time aboard a ship while on active duty, but his Dad, Marine Corp, spent seven and a half years aboard ship, as a civilian.

After his discharge from the Navy, he attended college in Jacksonville, Florida, and worked for some time as a welder on the East Coast. He also attended Amarillo College and was a certified welder. When he wasn't working, David enjoyed making horseshoe crosses and other designs.

David was a railroader. He had worked for BNSF since 1999. He was a conductor on the Wellington route at the time of his death. He was active with VFW, an avid biker, and he participated in many local charity rides.

David loved his family. He married the love of his life, Tina Henderson, on September 9, 2009. They renewed their vows in Jamaica in 2015. He was a great father to their children.

The family has found much comfort in the words and stories from his biker friends and BNSF family. When his fellow workers checked the board to see who they working with and saw David's name, they knew it would be a good run.

The family will receive guests at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 6 PM until 7 PM


David was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ernie and Daisy Wilkerson, and Howard and Emma McClure, Uncle Frank "Buster" McClure and Uncle James Young.

David is survived by his loving wife, Tina, his parents JD and Pat Wilkerson of Decatur, Texas, son Coty Gordon and wife Michele of San Antonio, daughter Shelby Milene of Amarillo, brother Tony Wilkerson and wife Rose, of Canyon, Aunts Melva Young and Shirley McClure of Amarillo, Aunt Betty Harding of Fort Worth, Uncle Howard "Sonny" McClure of Moore, Oklahoma, nephews Chance Walton of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Evan Walton of Canyon, Cody Boyd (Brittany) , Zak Kosechata (Jordyn) and Josh Kosechata and wife Sam of Lemoore, California and several cousins.
