Donna Burton, 61, of Groom died Thursday, April 6, 2017.
Rosary will be said 5:00 p.m. Sunday, April 9, 2017 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Groom, Texas. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, April 10, 2017 at the church with Rev. Raj Samala as celebrant. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in
Groom, Texas. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia.
Donna was born May 29, 1955 in Amarillo to Alvin and Virginia Ann Alward. She graduated from Claude High School in 1973 and married Jim Burton the same year. She was passionate about Girl Scouts of America as she served as a local Troop Leader as well as Council President. She affected the lives of many young girls in a positive manner. She was part of the Catholic Christian Mothers at church. She was a member of the Texas Press Association and served as Editor of the Groom News from 1990 to 2009, when she became the publisher and owner of the paper. She was also active with S.O.S. with the Senior Citizens Association.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Jim Burton; and three brothers, Jerry Dean, Steven Ray and David Ray.
Donna is survived by two daughters, April Jones and husband Brandon of Amarillo and Melody Miller and husband David of Kuna Idaho; one brother, Terry Alward and wife Brenda of Dumas; one niece, Brittnee Beevers of Amarillo; three grandchildren, Taylor James Jones, Jerome Miller and Cedar Miller; one aunt, Jane Brown; three uncles, Bud Alward, John Kennedy and Paul Kennedy; and two cousins, Mike Alward and Gloria Hudspeth.
Memorials may be made to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Building Fund, 411 Ware Ave.
