Dorothy Jean Downey

Dorothy Downey, age 88, of Amarillo died July 30, 2021 in Amarillo.

Dorothy was born on April 22, 1933 in Riverton, WY. She spent her childhood on her grandparents ranch in Lander, WY. Dorothy graduated from Saint Pat’s Academy in Sidney, Nebraska in 1951 and went on to join The Ursuline Sisters of Louisville, Kentucky. She attended college and became a teacher for over 40 years.  She remained a nun until 1983, to take care of her mother.

Dorothy received her Doctorate from The Ohio State University in 1981. She taught at the University of Tennessee for one year then joined the faculty of WTA&M where she was the coordinator of health education for 12 years until she retired in 1994. She continued working with friends until 2015.

Dorothy leaves behind three sisters; Sheila Whitlock, Donna Cielinski and Kathleen Mathews, 11 nieces and nephews and many, many dear friends and loved ones.

A mass is being said for her at The Ursuline Sisters in Louisville, KY. Her ashes will be released in the Wind River Valley in her beloved Wyoming.

In Lieu of Flowers donations may be given to WTAMU or City of Amarillo Animal Management welfare.
