Jimmy Dunn, 78, of Amarillo, passed away Sunday, October 8, 2017.
Memorial services will be 2:00 PM Saturday, October 14, 2017 at Schooler Funeral Home, Brentwood Chapel with Rev. Clay Brown officiating. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S Georgia, Amarillo, Texas.
Jimmy was born on July 7, 1939 in Amarillo to James Calvin Dunn Sr and Velma Dunn. Jimmy learned the value of hard work at the age of 5 when he started working at Fillmore Cleaners. His grandmother, Hazel Gay, paid him 25¢ to put together a box of clothes hangers, and an entrepreneur was born! By age fifteen he was pressing clothes, removing stains and replacing zippers. Eventually he learned to repair the equipment, patch the roof, and keep the bottles stocked in the 6¢ Coca Cola machine. After his grandmother's death, he carried on with the family business.
He spent summers as a child in Vega, driving a tractor with his cousins.
Jimmy got his first car when he was 12 and eventually turned that interest into a trucking business which took him all across the United States.
He married Lucille Weatherly in 1959 in Amarillo.
Jimmy was an outdoor enthusiast who spent many summers with his family at the lake or the beach. He was an avid water and snow skier. He enjoyed going to the mountains, camping, hiking, and riding motorcycles. He was a Dallas Cowboys fan and enjoyed supporting the Amarillo Bulls hockey and the Amarillo Venom football teams. He also played league baseball well into his seventies; however, his favorite pastime may have been napping.
From an early age Jimmy loved blues and rock n roll music. He had a huge record collection and extensive knowledge about the music industry.
Jimmy was a great storyteller who never met a stranger. He loved sharing his life experiences and hearing about others'. He was a loving father and "Poppy" to his grandchildren. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by his family, many friends and employees.
He was preceded in death by his grandmothers, Annie Dunn and Hazel Gay; and his father, James Calvin Dunn Sr.
Jimmy is survived by his wife, Lucille; his daughters, Vicki Dunn and David Browning and LeAnn Shelton and husband, Steve: his mother, Velma Dunn, all of Amarillo; his sister, Janice Haldeman of Rockport; two grandchildren, Quin and Peyton Shelton; and many other relatives.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday, October 13, 2017 from 6:30-7:30 pm.
The family request memorials be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2525 Wimberly Rd, Amarillo, Texas, 79109, American Cancer Society, 3915 Bell St., Amarillo, TX 79109 or to a favorite charity.
